Everywhere you look

If, like me, you compulsively read every little bit of text that comes your way you cannot avoid variations on the phrase “Keep Calm and Carry On“. This meme is everywhere right now, and although it’s overused, I think it’s a good thing. Whenever I see a variant of this phrase it’s a reminder of the original. The poster originally was meant to keep people from panicking during wartime. I find it a helpful phrase even today. There are many things out of our control and they are not always happy things. I try to do what I can, and let the rest go. I keep calm, and I carry on. What else is there? Giving up is not an option.

I read a little about the poster and found it was part of a series. One of the others said: “Your courage, your cheerfulness, your resolution will bring us to victory”. It’s definitely not as catchy, and it won’t work as well on a t-shirt, but I thought I’d share it because this one also makes a good point. It’s important to face adversity with a smile whenever possible. Certainly don’t repress your feelings, but try not to stay with depression any longer than you have to. It just makes whatever you’re facing that much worse.

Your assignment, should you choose to accept it:
265. How do you feel about the “Keep Calm and Carry On” posters? Collect some quotes to motivate yourself when you’re feeling low. If you’re having a rough week, focus on one thing at a time and try to breathe. This too shall pass.

  1. Anything that directs or focuses our attention to something helpful is good so these components: Keep calm – yeah well most don’t so if you get there you deserve some kind of crown 🙂 and “carry on” (in calmness) and refer again to the first. Anyone who actually achieves this simple meme would perhaps in fact deserve the crown touted on so many of the posters.
So we “see” it with our eyes and we remember it (how can we forget) but how many can actually BE it? 🙂 And therein lies the irony of this simple little phrase.
What choice? Well carry on mad, sad, frantic etc . . . don’t carry on just let your knickers knot you up . . . . loads of choices and many of us make any other one than this one “keep calm and carry on”.

  2. In my daughters fast paced world as a Pastry Chef they keep the cheerful slogan “Keep Calm and Bake On” hanging on the wall, the apron, the coffee mug and even a few spatulas! What this simple little reminder has accomplished has been enormous during high moments of stress in the culinary arena. Wish we had thought it, glad we borrowed it 🙂

I'd love to hear what you have to say.
